CUERO, Texas (Sept. 1) - Phylis Canion lived in Africa for four years. She's been a hunter all her life and has the mounted heads of a zebra and other exotic animals in her house to prove it.




Eric Gay, AP Phylis Canion holds the head of what she calls a chupacabra, or "goat sucker," at her home in Cuero, Texas, Friday. She found the animal dead outside her ranch and thinks it killed many of her chickens.

But the roadkill she found last month outside her ranch was a new one even for her, worth putting in a freezer hidden from curious onlookers: Canion believes she may have the head of the mythical, bloodsucking chupacabra.

"It is one ugly creature," Canion said, holding the head of the mammal, which has big ears, large fanged teeth and grayish-blue, mostly hairless skin.

Canion and some of her neighbors discovered the 40-pound bodies of three of the animals over four days in July outside her ranch in Cuero, 80 miles southeast of San Antonio. Canion said she saved the head of the one she found so she can get to get to the bottom of its ancestry through DNA testing and then mount it for posterity.

She suspects, as have many rural denizens over the years, that a chupacabra may have killed as many as 26 of her chickens in the past couple of years.

"I've seen a lot of nasty stuff. I've never seen anything like this," she said.

What tipped Canion to the possibility that this was no ugly coyote, but perhaps the vampire-like beast, is that the chickens weren't eaten or carried off - all the blood was drained from them, she said.

Chupacabra means "goat sucker" in Spanish, and it is said to have originated in Latin America, specifically Puerto Rico and Mexico.

Canion thinks recent heavy rains ran them right out of their dens.

"I think it could have wolf in it," Canion said. "It has to be a cross between two or three different things."

She said the finding has captured the imagination of locals, just like purported sightings of Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster have elsewhere.

But what folks are calling a chupacabra is probably just a strange breed of dog, said veterinarian Travis Schaar of the Main Street Animal Hospital in nearby Victoria.

"I'm not going to tell you that's not a chupacabra. I just think in my opinion a chupacabra is a dog," said Schaar, who has seen Canion's find.

The "chupacabras" could have all been part of a mutated litter of dogs, or they may be a new kind of mutt, he said.

As for the bloodsucking, Schaar said that this particular canine may simply have a preference for blood, letting its prey bleed out and licking it up.

Chupacabra or not, the discovery has spawned a local and international craze. Canion has started selling T-shirts that read: "2007, The Summer of the Chupacabra, Cuero, Texas," accompanied by a caricature of the creature. The $5 shirts have gone all over the world, including Japan, Australia and Brunei. Schaar also said he has one.

"If everyone has a fun time with it, we'll keep doing it," she said. "It's good for Cuero."

I would like to know if anyone thinks its fair that I am still stuck in a room with my 9 year old little sister, with no positive signs of a room being built in sight but yet my brother is being promised a trip to some tropical island as his graduation gift? I graduated with honor roll in all honors and college prep classes, he barely passed middle school and only passed high school cause he entered the Vo-tech. Thats all fine and whatever but i dont see why i have to hear about how we have no money for my nursing tuition and shit like that while they send him on a fucking trip. I cant wait till i graduate nursing school so i can get away from all their hypocrisy. Then when they come to me for shit im gonna tell them to shove it up their asses. Cause obv sending him on a trip to St. Assfuck takes higher priority to building the room for sabrina or helping me with tuition. What ever maybe im just a bitch so u tell me what u think.

Sorry for not updating in a long time but nursing school is tiring, pardon me if my spelling is a little off but I'm so tired right now. Well things have been going fine. Last week I felt like shit. Well its been a while. Summer is offically in full swing and naturally the summer madness has come with it. Been busey between work, horses, my luv and my friends. That and my family has been wicked asses latley but i dont feel like venting about it just now. World cup has been rediculously exciting, which is a surprise to me because i was never big into soccer int he first place. So thanks baby for introducing it to me cuz i think i might become a serious fan. Camping coming up this week, the Jew and the Bf will hopfully be joining the manna crazyness for a night or two. Family reunion on my mums side this week also. It will be nice to see my Grammy cause she is dying but i dont know anyone else. Time for an update! Weekend was good but tiring. The show went ok even thou my horse had a cow. He freaked out a bit at the judges booth and blew our class but i was able to pull him together and ended up getting a 6th place and a 4th place. Well, i dont like to loose but at least i got something! Hopefully next time will be better. He just need expeirence cause hes a baby and it was his first show. Last day of classes was today! I have finals all week tho. I got a final every day, Tues-Fri, at 10:30am. Thats not too bad cause i wont have to wake up early and I'll prob be done by noon. Other than that, nothing new. Waiting patiently for Anime Boston, 17 days 6hrs and 22min away. hehe

Umm im really upset right now cause i went over to Costa's to get my earing that fell out yesterday and he seemed pissed/upset. said something about "getting busted" and i thought he meant like his mum found his porn stash or something but no. i guess she gave him " a look", whatev that means. acause she obv knew i was over yesterday cause i came to get my earring that i lost their yesterday. and she obv thinks that we are like having crazy sexcapade episodes when she isnt there.
